Katrina Rose Photography - Grossinger's Resort

Known as one of the greatest hotels of the Catskills Borscht Belt, Grossinger's Resort officially opened in 1919 and was located in Liberty New York. Originally called Grossinger's Terrace Hill House and created by a pair of Austrian Immigrants, Asher and Malka Grossinger and their daughter Jennie. By the 1950s it had expanded to a full resort with more than 35 buildings, a golf course, ski slope, swimming pool, theatre, post office, and airstrip. In 1952, the resort became the first place in the world to use artificial snow on its ski slopes. The famous resort also inspired “Kellerman’s Mountain Resort” in the 1987 film Dirty Dancing.

After the death of Jennie in 1972 the resort, and many others around, began to decline. In 1986 the resort was sold to Servico but the golf course remained open until 2017. Servico originally planned to renovate the complex; however, those plans fell through, and the buildings sat abandoned until being demolished in 2019.
