Overbrook was originally built in 1896 in Cedar Grove, NJ to help with the overcrowded Newark Hospital. The facility had many different buildings including a firehouse, theater, laundromat, powerhouse, bakery, etc. making it feel like a little town. In the 1920s Overbrook was converted into a mental institution after being bought by the tri-state mental correction board. In 2006 there was a new Essex County Hospital built down the street for psychiatric patients causing Overbrook to close in 2007. The facility sat abandoned until it was demolished in 2017 and the space was turned into a park with townhomes and condominiums also being built onsite. The pictures below were taken in 2017 during demolition.
